Volunteers Needed

– Performance event coordinators at the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby are looking for volunteer actors for their annual “Slightly Haunted History at ‘Boo-lah’ Cemetery” event next month.

The event takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Beulah Cemetery in Colby. People interested in volunteering should contact Prairie Museum Director Ann Miner as soon as possible. Miner can be contacted at (785) 460-4590 or prairiem@st-tel.net.

“It really is easier than it might sound, and all of our volunteer actors end up having more fun than they expected, even the most timid,” said Miner. “We’ve already got a list of characters to choose from, we help with the script, costumes, and there’s no need to worry about memorizing lines.”

Miner explained that volunteer actors dress in costume to bring Colby forebears to life with a short dialogue lasting no more than five minutes. She also said that although a list of potential characters has been gathered, volunteers are able to choose any person they like but prefers they be buried within blocks 49-55 at Beulah Cemetery, which coincides with this year’s route through the grounds.

Usually the group gathers between 8 and ten volunteers. Miner is hoping to attract at least 4 to 6 more to round out the cast.

“The museum library and archives are a great place to look for information regarding possible characters,” added Miner. “Of course, some files are overflowing with information about a person and others don’t offer much insight so it’s helpful if an actor does some preliminary research to make sure we have plenty of information before becoming completely invested in a character.”

Miner said event coordinators help actors conduct research, assist with writing a short script and might also be able to help find costumes adding that the event welcomes both adult and young actors, alike.
